How to do box breathing
- Get comfortable. Sit or lie down somewhere quiet. Relax your shoulders.
- Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4.
- Hold gently for 4.
- Exhale slowly for 4.
- Hold again for 4.
- Repeat for a few minutes.
If 4 counts feels too long, use 3. If it feels easy, some people use 5. The point is that all four sides stay equal and the pace is slow and comfortable — never strained.
Fitting it into a wind-down
Many people pair box breathing with other evening habits: dimming the lights, putting the phone on the nightstand, and doing a few minutes of slow breathing in bed. Doing it at the same time each night makes it easier to remember.
Other calm-down patterns
- Long exhale: inhale for 4, exhale for 8.
- Sigh: two inhales through the nose, then one long exhale.
